Methodology: How we choose the best VPNs for Russia

Selecting a VPN for Russia isn’t as straightforward as it might seem. To be included in our list, VPNs had to perform well in the following areas:

Network suitability

To get a Russian IP address, you need a VPN provider with servers physically or virtually located in Russia. To avoid congestion and keep your options for connecting to a nearby server open, we also scored providers on the overall size of their networks. Finally, we scored them on their ability to disguise VPN traffic as regular web traffic to avoid detection on Russian (or any other restrictive) networks.

These scores were appropriately weighted and then summed to create overall scores out of 10 for each provider.
